Barbara’s and Project Puffin

Why name a cereal after a puffin? Employee inspiration. A longtime employee fell in love with these adorable seabirds during an Alaskan trip. It was the “ah-hah” moment when puffins the bird met Puffins the cereal. The rest is history.

We became passionate fans of Project Puffin, the Audubon Society's efforts to restore puffins to their former habitat of Eastern Egg Rock off the rugged coast of Maine. Once plentiful on this rocky island, by 1973, when Audubon launched Project Puffin, the orange-footed swimming birds had all but disappeared.

Between 1973 and 1986, Audubon naturalists transported a small colony of young puffins from puffin-rich Newfoundland and reintroduced them to Eastern Egg Rock. The first puffin pairs began to return to Eastern Egg Rock in 1977. Today, more than 30 years later, puffins are flourishing, with 101 pairs nesting on the island.

Project Puffin celebrated its 35th anniversary during August 2009. Barbara's is proud to be the sponsor of Audubon's Project Puffin Cam. View real time video of puffins and their seabird neighbors at Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Project Puffin

Project Puffin, led by world-renowned ornithologist Dr. Stephen Kress, is an international leader in seabird conservation. Using innovative restoration techniques, the project promotes responsible stewardship of puffin colonies on historic nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine. Kress and his team’s long-term commitment to this mission have enabled puffin colonies to flourish.

Adopt-A-Puffin with Barbara’s

You can adopt your very own puffin by collecting box tops or UPC symbols from any Puffins or Wild Puffs cereal and send them to Barbara's Bakery.

Your school, classroom, club or other organization can adopt and name its very own puffin with 250 box tops or UPC code flaps (found at the base of the box). We will send your group a biography and picture of the Puffin you adopt about 45 days after we receive your box tops. Individuals can also participate by sending in box tops. We'll pool them until we have enough to adopt a puffin for the collective group. Through Audubon's program, we will adopt one puffin for one year.

Send your box tops to:
Barbara's Bakery
Attn: Adopt-A-Puffin
3900 Cypress Drive, Petaluma, CA 94954.
